The brand new SWMP5 spring assisted knife series is big and extremely well built. This Smith & Wesson Military & Police series has an upgraded safety mechanism. The slide safety works like a charm. Made with an extremely ergonomic shape, this spring assisted knife is comfortable to hold. Comes with the MAGIC assisted openeing system, dual thumb stud opener and spine opener (which creates a nearly automatic feel to the knife), a glass breaker, and a tip down pocket clip. The SWMP5LS has a grey and black handle and an all black, tactical part serrated edged blade. This version is by far the best yet of the bigger style SWMP MAGIC knives. Smith & Wesson Military & Police 5LS Knife Review

Built for heavy duty use, the S&W Military and Police 5LS spring assisted knife combines the MAGIC spring assist system with a bigger, beefier body than the first generation of this knife line. With a heavy duty body built of aluminum and a black rubber outlay at the base of the handle, the contours of the handle are comfortable in your hand. The slide safety keeps the blade locked when you want it to stay that way. The MAGIC spring assist snaps the blade open with authority when you trigger the spine flipper or give the dual thumb stud a gentle push. Smith and Wesson Knives are well built and this particular one is a great every day knife.

BLADE

The 4034 stainless steel blade has a black tactical finish and partial serrations that measure 1 ¼ long. The blade is 3 ¼ long . With a unique spine look on the modified drop point blade, the SWMP5LS stands ready to cut whatever you throw at it. The steel quality is plenty adequate for everyday heavy use. It easily takes an edge when it needs to be sharpened. The blade locks open with a very solid liner lock. Overall blade rating is B+.

HANDLE

The handle measures 4 7/8 long and has a great glass breaker on the butt. The handle has good contours that put your hand in an ideal position to manipulate the blade. I really like the thickness of the handle, it gives the entire knife some serious heft and makes it comfortable to hold for long periods of time. The rubber outlay at the base of the handle gives it tons of grip and the M&P logo above the slide safety as well as the S&W log on the rubber outlay give it a touch of class not usually found in knives in this price range.

SAFETY AND FIRE BUTTON

The MAGIC spring assist system fires the blade beautifully. It is fast and smooth. I especially like the safety on the 5 series. It is a slide button positioned just near the top of the handle. With a slight curve in the channel that mirrors the finger choil, the slide looks nice and operates perfect. When live, the slide safety channel has a red dot painted that tells you the knife is live and ready to be opened.

OVERALL IMPRESSION

The Smith & Wesson Military & Police 5LS is a high quality spring assist knife at a very attractive price. If you want it with a plain edge blade or prefer a gunmetal blue handleyou can get it like that also. This is one of our favorite spring assisted knife series for under $50.00. It is a big spring assisted knife that will be a workhorse in your pocket or gear bag for many years to come.
